How Can I Copy or Backup My Ps3 Trophies and Game Saves?

How Can I Copy or Backup My PS3 Trophies and Game Saves?

With the PlayStation 3 this becomes much easier. Not only can we make swift backups to various storage media, it’s also easy to share, or download savefiles using the internet.

Method 1: Full Backup

Of course there’s no easier way to secure your save-files than by doing a full fledged back-up.

One of the downsides is that it really is a one-click-backup, meaning you can’t select specific parts or use it for anything other than to put it back later, which then erases all the other content.

Doing it is pretty simple though. Just make sure you’ve got a flash drive, external hard disk or one of the supported memory cards at hand. Make sure you’ve got enough room on it before you try backing up your entire HD film collection.

If you want to do a more specific backup, or learn how to place downloaded savefiles on your PlayStation 3, check Method 2 below.

  1. Navigate to Settings -> System Settings

  2. Scroll down and select Backup Utility and choose Backup.
  3. You will see two warnings, one will tell you that you can’t backup Trophies, the other one is a regular affirmation form. Confirm both times.
  4. Next, you’ll be prompted for the destination. You can use any flash drive or external hard disk, just make sure you’ve got enough space available.

  5. Wait for the process to finish, and you’re done. Once you’ve put the backup somewhere safe, you can sleep soundly.

Note: If you want to restore the backup, go back to Settings -> System Settings -> Backup Utility and select “restore”. Once you’ve told your PlayStation where to look, your files will magically fall into place, but know that all the other files on the PlayStation 3 will be deleted!

Method 2: Manual Backup

If you want to have a bigger say in the backup process, you can always try doing it manually. The method described below will work for all files (videos and pictures alike), but we’re going to look specifically at the save files.

The process is pretty simple. Just insert your storage drive and follow the steps below.

  1. Go to Game -> Saved Data Utility. This is where all your saves are stored.
  2. Browse to the right savegame and press triangle ( ). And select Copy in the newly opened sidebar.

  3. You’ll be prompted for the destination. Any external storage drive will do (like a USB stick or a memory card), save games aren’t so very big. Additionally, you can also transfer the save game to another user account.

  4. Wait for the copying to finish, and you’re done!

Note: These savegames can be easily transfered from and to other media. You can store them on your PC, mail them to friends, and so on. The posibilities are endless.

Putting The Ps3 Game Saves Back In Place

If you want to copy a savegame to your PlayStation 3, you’ll need to do the following:

  1. Go to Game -> Saved Data Utility.
  2. Way at the top you’ll see your storage drives. Click on the one you need.

  3. Just like before, select the desired savegame and press triangle ( ). Then select Copy in the sidebar and choose to copy to your PlayStation 3’s hard drive.
  4. Wait for it to finish copying, and you’re done!

Please do remember that,

You need to use the following hierarchy:
(Storage: e.g. X:)PS3SAVEDATA*name* (files here)

This *name* is specific for each savegame. Just use the folders that exist in the downloaded archive. Also

Full back up should do the job for everything except the trophies. Your trophy collection can’t be backed up in the traditional way (would open too much doors for cheating), instead you need to synchronize them with the server before removing your hard drive and back again after installing the new one.

To do this, you need an active internet connection and a PSN account. If you don’t have one, make one now. Then go to Game -> Trophy Collection and press triangle. Choose ‘Synchronise with Server’. If you use the same PSN account on both playstations, there shouldn’t be any problem. Trophy achievements are automatically synced with Sony’s server.

Burning Ps3 Games the Easy Way

Are you worried that your PS3 game disks may get damaged, lost, or stolen? Are you looking for a way to start burning PS3 games to create backups of your original game disks? Have you already tried making copies using the software that you traditionally use to copy music and videos? It didn’t work, did it? That’s because the manufacturers of the PS2 games knew you were going to try to create backup copies in case you damaged or lost your original games.

To defeat that attempt, they integrated some copy protections into their PS2 game program. What you need is some sort of software that can bypass that copy protection and enable you to begin burning PS3 games. The good news is that some clever computer software developers tackled the problem, and that this much needed game copying software is now readily available. The one software most highly recommended for burning PS3 games by experienced gamers is one call Game Copying Wizard.

Once you have acquired your copy of the Game Copy Wizard application, the only other things that you will need to begin burning PS3 game backups of your original PS3 games are a computer with a DVD burner and a supply of DVD blank disks. With all the needed equipment and supplies at hand, you can begin creating backups using the following steps.

1. Install and start the Game Copying Wizard application.

2. Insert the original game disk, and follow the instructions given onscreen.

3. Remove the original game disk when indicated.

4. Insert the blank DVD disk, and follow the instructions given onscreen to burn the game files to the DVD.

5. Remove the completed backup when indicated.

As you can see, no rocket science was involved. You didn’t have to be a computer geek, because the real computer geeks made it easy for you to start burning PS3 games. There are no longer any excuses; no reason to procrastinate. The sooner you get a copy of the Game Copying Wizard, the sooner you can start protecting your valuable PS3 games with backup copies.

Ps3 Hdmi – How To Make It Near-Complete

Necessary disclosure: I do not own this model. I have what used to be a 60GB model, recently upgraded to 320GB – the gold standard.

As compared to the 60GB model:
______________________________________________
+ less expensive (I paid $599 for my 60GB PS3)
+ 33% more storage
+ needs less power
+ dual shock controller (rumble)
– no memory card interfaces
– 2 USB ports vs. 4 USB ports on the 60GB
– no PS2 compatibility
______________________________________________

This model comes with an 80GB drive. This is nice because, most would agree, 80GB is more than 60GB. If you feel that the extra 20GB is a big deal, maybe you should think again. I upgraded my 60GB to 320GB because I was about to run out of space, with only 10GB or so left. One month or so later, I’m using more than 80GB already – just downloaded the Ratchet and Clank minigame from PSN and it alone needs about 3GB. My advice is to buy this model and upgrade it yourself. It’s (relatively) easy and you can find a lot of advice if you Google for it.

If you are on the upgrade path, $80 would buy you a 320GB drive. I used the Western Digital WD3200BEVT 320 GB Scorpio Sata 5400 Rpm 8MB 2.5 inch myself but that was back in June/July and I paid about $150 then; you could get much larger drives for less now. 500GB drives are available for less than $100 and you should try to get one of those if you are planning to store lots of videos. One that I tested would be the 500GB 2.5″ Sata Drive which replaced my laptop’s 60GB little drive and I helped a friend upgrade his own PS3 HDMI with. The nice thing about upgrading your disk is that you are also going to be left with a perfectly good 80GB or $160GB drive which you can place into a cheap enclosure, and the StarTech AT2510U2 InfoSafe 2.5-Inch USB/SATA Hard Drive Enclosure worked for me. I am using the free leftover drive as a backup device for family photos.

Upgrading the disk is (relatively) easy and you can find a lot of advice on the Net. Search for ” PS3 HDMI Hard Drive Upgrade (HOWTO)” for videos that should help you decide if you are comfortable with upgrading. If upgrading is the first thing you do (before installing games or uploading personal files), everything becomes very easy because you need not worry about backups or restores. I upgraded my box in a couple of hours WITH the backup/restore steps.

The lack of memory card interfaces is annoying but you can get around it. Copy your stuff to a USB drive or flash drive and… problem solved. You can then upload your things through the USB. It’s somewhat inconvenient but it’s no big deal.

My old (10 months) 60GB model has 4 USB slots and I am using all of them. One for the PS3 HDMI Eye (camera), a second has a wireless keyboard dongle, the third is where the racing wheel plugs in and the last one I use to charge controllers. Can you live with 2 slots? I suppose you can but there’s going to be some plugging/unplugging if you begin adding peripherals. I suppose you could get one of those USB ports multiplexers. They’re ugly but… it’s doable.

PS2 compatibility… can’t get it. Sorry. I don’t play PS2 games but my kids do. In fact, they just bought some Sonic game a couple of days ago. I was surprised but… de gustibus. They’re also playing Kingdom Hearts and Destroy All Humans.

This model comes with a couple of improvements over the gold standard. It burns less electricity, which is a good thing for the rain forests, keeping them cool and maybe you save a few dollars on your electric bill. And, of course you get the advanced controller.

Briefly:
– If you are planning to upgrade, the 80GB model is the way to go because it is selling for $100 less than the larger disk version and you can use the savings to pay for your disk upgrade
– Get yourself a USB port multiplexer if you need more than 2 ports
– Transfer your photos to flash drives to get around the missing memory card interfaces
– Or or, even better, to address both the USB and the memory card issues, get the Playstation 3 Media Hub+ for 2 extra USB ports AND a card reader
– Keep your PS2 if you have one and still wish to play PS2 games in the future.
– Enjoy your new PS3 HDMI.
