online multiplayer virtual world games
Anyone know of a free pc game to play multiplayer with someone through an internet connection?

I have a friend, but she lives 900 miles away. Trying to find games to play with her.

Specifications:
Exclude Virtual Worlds
Exclude MMORPGS
Be free

For instance, would really enjoy a multiplayer version of The sims. But dislike The Sims Online (Ea-land) Because its a larger community and based around a MMOG.

Looking for a game that can be multiplayer, That I can play online with a friend.

Co-Op? versus? doesn’t matter.
3d? 2d? doesn’t matter.

Also, if anyone knows of the possibility of playing a SNES emulator online? Idk if that’s possible.

Anything you can think of helps, even if it doesn’t necessarily match the specifications. Thanks.

I would have to say try Gaia Online, its a free virtual world that you can do stuff in and have fun with your friends. As far a SNES emulators go, you can get them, but you won’t be able to play with your friend online if thats what you mean.

Online Games: Role Playing Games – and the Fan Base Grows

Role Playing Games

Players or participants of Role Laying Games assume the role of different fictional characters, more popularly known as avatars, and try to make these characters victorious with each challenge it faces.

These avatars can be customized and built according to the preferences of the player. They may determine where their character may excel. However, as the game progresses, the character may built up more strength and powers or otherwise.

Online role playing games also have guidelines and a formal system of rules and mechanics that needs to be met. Working around these rules, participants can shape the outcome and direction of their games.

Background

It was in the mid 1970s when it all started. Online role playing games was developed from its traditional counterparts (computer role playing games and video games). In this year, the earliest multi user games started to appear. In 1980, Rogue, a very famous dungeon crawler was released. It was quite different back then because monsters, items, and settings were represented by letters. Form then, development of a new genre of similar clones.

One of the most influential games among all online role playing games is Dungeons and Dragons. It has a big effect in the development of online RPGs. The success of Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest console games divided the genre of role playing games into two: the console role playing games and the computer role playing games. Cultural differences are the reason behind this classification. Game consoles are produced primarily for personal computers in Japan and role playing games in the Western World.

When it was introduced, Online Role Playing Games began as single player games. However the arrival of the internet and the virtual world made developments in online role playing games. After that, players from all over the world began to enjoy the games in this genre. They were able to participate in multiplayer games with players from all parts of the globe.

These games have grown to be an online gamer sensation that RPG companies discover ways to make it better. These improvements led multiplayer gaming into massively multiplayer online role playing games (MMORPGs) that continued to make online gaming more popular each year.

Challenges

These games are centered on stories which are more often than not, adventure and fictional in type. There are also centered on fantasy and mythological genres. Players have to reach a certain goal or complete a mission in order to advance further into the game.  These missions and challenges are often called “quests”.

Some of these involve chasing off dragons, fighting evil wizards and masters, and saving damsels in distress. The outcomes of these games are dependent on the characters strengths, characteristic, and skills.

Little More About the Avatars

As stated, players have the power to customize their characters according to their preferences. However, the improvement of there characters are highly dependent on the course of the game. Enhancing their character’s skills, attributes, equipment, and special abilities are important so as to achieve the goal of the game.

Improvements and achievements are often given as rewards for accomplishing their quests and overcoming obstacles. In short, these rewards have to be earned.

Multiplayer Modes

Among the online role playing games, Diablo was the first to come up with multiplayer options. Multiplayer modes became popularity during the mid1990s. Then after, they became massively multiplayer online role playing games (MMORPGs) because of its popularity.

Massively Multiplayer Online Games

The most important aspect of a game that inspires more gamers to play it is the amount of challenge it provides. The best way of making a game more challenging is to make it multiplayer. Because Artificial Intelligence in computer games has not reached a point yet where it can predict every kind of move you make and also every kind of player, they are easy to beat once you understand the patterns they follow. In multiplayer games however, you get to play with and against other gamers, and each time you play someone new you face a new kind of challenge. Owing to this fact, the game developers came up with a new category of games. This category is Massively Multiplayer Online Game or MMOG and enables thousands of players to join and play the game simultaneously via the internet.

There are some MMOG’s these days that have servers all around the globe connected to each other, enabling gamers to interact and play each other from every corner of the globe. Most MMOG’s create a persistent universe where the game goes on whether any player is online or not. Since however, it stresses on multiplayer gameplay, they usually have Artificial Intelligence, to allow the game to be played in single player mode and people do not leave if there is no other person online.

Unlike single player games MMOG’s do not have an end point in the game. They are modeled in a way that the game goes on and the characters within it develop like real life. Only a few MMOG’s have a winning condition that too based on the standings of the players after due time the game has been played.

MMOG’s are able to support thousands of players online simultaneously. Because of the diversity of gamers playing these games from around the globe and the amount of detail the game developers put into these games, they are very challenging and filled with endless new experiences. Some MMOG’s allow clans to be formed, so people can form their own groups of gamers and compete with other groups. This makes the game even more challenging as each clan tried to overpower the other clans.

MMOG’s are most suitable for gamers with loads of free time as they are quite addictive and time consuming. However, for any gamer who appreciates game details and quality, MMOG’S are heavenly.

The Huge Online Multiplayer Games Market

Over recent years there has been an ever increasing demand worldwide for online multiplayer games. This growth has been fuelled by the booming skill games sector which has evolved from being a niche market just a few years ago, to very much a mainstream player today.

I always considered typical online gamers to be young males playing the ‘hardcore’ console type games. Although this market does exist and it is itself a massive one, the skill games sector has really flourished over recent years and appeals to a much broader demographic.

Skill games or addictive online games, as they are sometimes known, are browser based games which are played in a tournament format. Each participant pays a cash entry fee to play and with a cash or merchandise prize going to the winner or winners of the tournament.

Unlike the often complex console games, skill games last for only a few minutes at a time and have only a few very simple rules to learn before playing. For these reasons, skill games can be enjoyed during a break at work or at any other time when you have a few minutes to spare. In fact, 80% of people who have played addictive online games during the workday felt better focused as a result of this periodic mental break. What’s more, an amazing 72% relied on game breaks to reduce job-related stress.

The simplicity and rapid completion of this gaming type is a key reason why these online multiplayer games appeal to a much broader age range than the far more complicated and immersive console games. In fact, skill gamers tend to be both men and women between the ages of 35 and 65, with a slight demographic skew towards women. Although this is the main participating age range, people of all ages, from all over the world, play in there millions. Such is the demand for the playing of these games, there are now skill gaming sites with hundreds of thousands of individuals playing games online at any one time.

What Exactly Are Skill Games?

Skill games are familiar, fun pastimes such as:

• Board games like draughts, backgammon

• Sports games like pool, golf and basketball

• Puzzle games like jigsaws and word games

Until quite recently I had never played an online game in my life thinking that they were for kids and would simply not interest me. How wrong I was. I have always loved playing pool, so I went online and found a pool game to play. It was brilliant and I was instantly hooked. I started playing for free but when I had become a little more competent, I started placing small wagers on each game; this just added to the excitement. I then entered a £1000 cash prize tournament and although I did not win, I felt a real buzz knowing that I was competing live with people around the world. I can really now see first hand how and why the skill games market has really grasped the attention of all ages from all cultures and countries worldwide.

If you’re looking for a little excitement and you have not yet done so, I urge you to pick out a good skill games site and have a crack at some online multiplayer games today.
